Body of 26-year-old Minsk resident found near "Institute of Culture". Killer identified after 16 years

A note with the words "Stsyopa, debt, 187****" was found in the victim's pocket.

The incident occurred in the spring of 2010. In Minsk, near the "Institute of Culture" metro station, a brutal murder of a 26-year-old man took place. Investigators managed to track down the perpetrator 16 years later. Details of the complicated case were revealed by the publication "Na Strazhe".

In May 2010, the body of a young man with numerous stab wounds was found in the bushes in the courtyard of a multi-storey building near the "Institute of Culture" station. A discarded knife with the inscription "Live in peace" was lying nearby.

The examination established that the blows were inflicted from the back. After the assault, the attacker flipped the victim face up, dragged him deeper into the bushes, and covered his head with a torn burdock leaf.

Nearby, operatives found fragments of broken bottles, plastic cups with traces of alcohol, an empty beer can, and cigarette butts. Specialists confiscated fingerprints and DNA samples, but no matches were found in the existing databases at that time.

The police worked on various theories, including one related to debts: a note with the words "Stsyopa, debt, 187****" was found in the victim's pocket. But this lead led the investigation to a dead end. Identifying the owner of the rare knife also yielded no results, even though the murder weapon was shown on television.

Acquaintances of the deceased, neighbors, and his cohabitant with her brothers, with whom he had a conflict shortly before the tragedy, fell under suspicion. However, everyone had an alibi.

"All leads came to a dead end. Detectives identified over 140 people who, on that May evening, exited a train at a nearby platform and walked through the ill-fated courtyard. Residents of surrounding houses and employees of round-the-clock establishments were interviewed. Taxi drivers on duty in the area were checked, previously convicted individuals and the victim's business colleagues were investigated. Biological samples were taken from almost 600 people. A colossal amount of work was done, but it yielded no results at the time," the newspaper writes.

During the initial investigation, a tip came in from the victim's neighbor.

The woman claimed to know the perpetrator and pointed to a 27-year-old local resident. But at that time, his involvement in the crime was not confirmed.

The crime was solved 16 years later when employees of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Minsk City Executive Committee and the Kastrychnitski District Department of Internal Affairs revisited archival materials and re-interviewed one of the witnesses.

— We spoke with this woman again, and she confessed: in 2010, she was forced to falsely accuse an innocent person, — said Andrei Bakhar, Lieutenant Colonel of Police, head of the Criminal Investigation Department of Minsk.

As it turned out, in those years, the Minsk resident was in close contact with two brothers — 29-year-old Aleksey and 31-year-old Ivan (names changed). The men lived in the neighboring entrance to the deceased and occasionally drank together.

In 2010, they were also interrogated, but no evidence was found against them. The witness confessed: the murder was committed by the younger of the brothers, who then intimidated her and ordered her to mislead the investigation.

The reconstructed picture of that evening is as follows: a group of neighbors and their friend were drinking alcohol on the street. At some point, a conflict arose between the deceased and Aleksey. The younger brother pulled out a knife and, in front of witnesses, stabbed his opponent to death, after which he ordered everyone to remain silent.

The accused never had to face trial: after the incident, he began to drink heavily and died a year and a half later from liver cirrhosis.
