Instagram Challenges YouTube: Starts Testing Horizontal Video Posting
Instagram has started testing a new format called Features, which allows posting horizontal videos up to 90 minutes long.

With this, the social network intends to attract podcast creators, interviewers, and other long-form video creators, competing with YouTube.
As reported by The Verge, the launch of the new format was announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri and VP of Product Tessa Lyons.
Features is currently being tested by selected creators in the US. Earlier tests began in Brazil. Instagram plans to expand the number of program participants in the future.
Long videos will appear in the main feed and the Explore recommendations section. Creators will be able to post short segments in Reels with a link to the full recording. For example, viewers can switch from an interview snippet to the full episode without leaving Instagram. This promotion method is also planned for podcasts.
Mosseri admitted that he had long opposed the appearance of long videos on the social network. In his opinion, watching long videos reduces the time users spend on photos, short videos, and communicating with friends.
Now, Instagram's management aims to combine both formats: short videos will attract viewers to the full versions of episodes.
Features is also designed for viewing via the Instagram for TV app. In June, the social network had already tested horizontal videos on Samsung TVs.
The app is also available on Amazon Fire TV and Google TV devices. Instagram believes that a large screen is better suited for viewing long videos than a smartphone.
At the same time, the service is testing a Series function, which allows combining several Reels into sequential episodes on the creator's page. Another direction is to increase the visibility of live broadcasts, including among users who do not follow the host.
The timelines for the mass rollout of new features have not yet been announced.
