In Great Britain, Capybara Samba Spotted Again More Than Half a Year After Disappearing in the Forest

At Marwell Zoo in Hampshire, near Winchester, they continue to search for Capybara Samba, who escaped more than half a year ago. Recently, wildlife surveillance cameras again captured the animal. The images, taken in October, were blurry but confirm that Samba is still at large, writes the BBC.

The capybara escaped from the zoo on March 17 — less than 24 hours after arriving. She broke out of a temporary enclosure where she was with her sister Tango. Her sister was soon caught, but Samba could not be found.

After the last sighting in August, zoo staff installed additional cameras. The exact location where the latest photos were taken is not being disclosed, as they were obtained on private property.

Zoo representatives note that Samba's return is a gradual and carefully planned process. Although staff know the area where the animal is located, simply approaching and catching her is impossible. It's important not to frighten the capybara: severe stress could cause her to move to another location and complicate a safe return.

To encourage Samba to regularly return to a specific location, staff have set up a feeding station there. The zoo considers this an important step in preparing for her safe capture.

In recent months, the capybara has been spotted in various locations, including near a pub and on a riverbank, where she was basking in the sun. Once, she was seen by a person walking their dog: the animal was on the bank and then swam down the river.

In July, a male capybara named Ripple was introduced to the zoo and placed with Tango. Samba, however, remains at large and, according to staff, is more prone to adventure than her sister.

Capybaras originate from South America and are the largest rodents in the world. They have a massive body, short legs, and partially webbed feet, which help them swim well.
