Former Head of German Intelligence, Arrested on Treason Charges, Diagnosed with Blood Cancer
The 80-year-old Hanning is currently in solitary confinement in a pre-trial detention center in Münster.

August Hanning, the former head of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service, arrested on suspicion of high treason, is suffering from leukemia, Bild reports.
The 80-year-old Hanning is currently in solitary confinement in a pre-trial detention center in Münster. He was diagnosed about a year ago. Hanning's defense is seeking his release from custody on medical grounds.
Hanning was arrested on October 6 at his home in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The German Public Prosecutor General suspects him of high treason, gathering state secrets, and intelligence activities.
According to the investigation, former BND employee Manfred D. handed over about two thousand secret documents to Hanning for money starting in 2022. The former intelligence chief's lawyer confirmed that his client possessed confidential materials but rejected claims that they could have harmed Germany.
According to BILD, Hanning's lawyers filed a complaint with the Federal Supreme Court, attaching a medical report about his illness.
The defense argues that it is impossible to provide the necessary treatment under the conditions of the pre-trial detention center. Previously, Hanning was under constant supervision by hematologists, requiring regular blood tests and adjustments to his medication. Additionally, he is taken for dialysis every few days.
Next week, the court is expected to consider the issue of Hanning's continued detention.
