Kabanchuk: The number of Belarusians who died for Russia may already be approaching Afghan losses
According to his data, more than 3000 Belarusians have been recruited into the Russian army. And more than 500 of them have died.

The number of Belarusians fighting on Russia's side against Ukraine is increasing. This was stated by Vadzim Kabanchuk, representative of the United Transitional Cabinet on Defense and National Security, in an interview with the Belarusian service of Polish Radio.
«Unfortunately, we have statistics showing that the number of Belarusian mercenaries joining the so-called 'SMO' (Special Military Operation) is increasing. Data from this summer showed that over 3000 Belarusians had already been recruited into the Russian army,» said Kabanchuk.
According to him, by summer, more than 500 of them had died. Kabanchuk noted that the intensity of hostilities has increased by 40% since then, so the losses may have already approached or even exceeded the number of Belarusians who died during the ten-year war in Afghanistan. Approximately 770 natives of Belarus died during that time.
«80% immediately end up in assault infantry. And for most of them, the very first combat mission is their last,» he said.
Several more dozens are in Ukrainian captivity.
According to Kabanchuk, during interrogations of prisoners, it was revealed that the vast majority went to war for money. Many have a criminal record, some more than one. Approximately 10%, according to his assessment, went due to ideological convictions.
Most often, according to Kabanchuk, Belarusian labor migrants in Russia are recruited. They are promised wages they wouldn't earn in a year on a construction site, or work as drivers or in logistics.
Kabanchuk also drew attention to the fact that in Belarus, there is a different attitude towards those who fight on different sides. Volunteers fighting for Ukraine are sentenced in absentia to 10-20 years. He himself received a 20-year sentence in absentia.
«Someone who fought on Russia's side returned peacefully and lives their life,» said Kabanchuk.
